Our tendency is often to do today that which we did yesterday (we are all creatures of habit!). Or in the case of today’s discussion, we might tend to do this year that which we did last year. Would you be satisfied with a repeat of last year’s performance and results? If so, just hit rewind and do what you did last year. If not, read on.
Since none of us operate at full envelope can we go with the assumption that we all have untapped potential? I suggest we find creative ways to embrace new habits, clarify a new vision and push the envelope for new levels of success!
It seems logical to create a new game plan if we are going to create a new level of achievement. Consider where you are starting from in the various categories of performance, as that is the only way to measure progress. Set new goals in your business and personal life, in writing, and with specific parameters, numbers, etc. The more precise and detailed, the better.
An awareness of the deviation between where you are NOW and where you plan to be on 12/31/25 will create “constructive tension” for you that will compel you to go to work on the new game plan.
Here are some thought starters for you… In business goals, if you are in sales, some categories to target in your goal-setting process might be: your annual income goal; to achieve that goal you’ll need to ID things like…number of new accounts to acquire; increase average sale by $X; Increase average account volume by 15%; increase average daily call count by 10%; Write a minimum of 5 hand-written notes per day to prospects; get the idea? If you want more and better results, you need more and better ideas and actions.
On the personal goal-setting side some categories to consider for improvement are:
Physical goals; Financial goals; Educational/Development goals;
Charitable goals; Family goals; Relationship goals; Spiritual goals;
It has been said that if we write our goals down we will triple the commitment to the goal and the probability of achievement. If we also assign a time frame for goal achievement it is speculated that we will have quintupled our commitment to the goals and the probability of achievement! Those are good odds for sure.
While it is great to focus on noble goals like advancing important relationships, don’t be reluctant to use monetary references in your goal-setting process. The use of an annual income goal does not imply you are overly materialistic. Your income is a measuring stick of the service you are rendering to others. I love the Zig Ziglar quote that “You can get anything you want in life if you just help enough other people get what they want!”
Think Abundance, not Scarcity, in your life plan. The beauty of Free Market Capitalism is that we have an unlimited opportunity to learn, earn, grow and excel. Our Creator never put vast multitudes of people on this earth to scramble for a limited supply! This writer is convinced that whatever we desire, work for, and seek in good spirit is available to us in plentiful supply. Decide what you want, what you are willing to give up to get it, and go for it with vigor and determination!
