Organization Oasis: 5 Steps to the Perfect College Pad

Living in an apartment is very different than living in a dorm room. Living in an apartment allows you to have more space, freedom to furnish how you wish and did we mention more space? Though space and furnishing freedom is wonderful, especially after cramming into a dorm room with someone else's furniture, if not done correctly, space can often create an even bigger mess.  It is because of this, we would like to share tips and tricks to organize each room of your apartment to perfection.

•The Entertaining Living Room

The living room is where all your guests will spend their time, as well as where you and your roommates will share some laughs.  Since it is a main room in your apartment, organization is key.  Once you move into your apartment, keep track of what clutters up the room.  For example, does everyone come into the living room and take off their shoes- leaving a messy pile? Do you and your roommates come back from class and lay your jackets on the couch with your keys sinking into the cracks of the cushions?  Figuring out what makes a room messy will in turn help you organize the room to your specific needs.  If jackets are scattered everywhere in the room, then purchase a coat rack or hooks. If keys are always missing then invest in command strips and hooks or look for a fun bowl that keys can be placed in.

•The Eat-In Kitchen

To keep your kitchen clean and organized it is important to refrain from cluttering up your space with unnecessary items.  To keep your kitchen user friendly, be sure to leave the essential cooking utensils near the oven. When arranging your cabinets, place the most important items on the bottom shelves. Plates, bowls and every day items should be easily accessible for everyone.

Organizing your fridge is also vital to having the perfect kitchen. Depending on how you and your roommates are handling the grocery shopping, the fridge should be organized accordingly. If you are each buying your own groceries, be sure to split up the fridge by shelf so that each person knows where and what food is theirs.

•The Organized Bathroom

Sharing a bathroom with a whole floor of other college students is no longer a problem when living in an apartment! Though no matter how many people you are sharing your bathroom with, organization is always key.  Baskets, trays, or plastic tubs are a great way of dividing up space for you and your roommates health and beauty aids. Having allotted space for each roommate's things will help organize the bathroom and reduce the clutter.

•The Perfect Bedroom

It is important to make your bedroom the perfect oasis for you to be in after a long day of classes.  Command hooks, flat long bins and a dirty clothes hamper are three purchases that you won't regret. The command hooks can be used for your backpack and whatever else ends up on your floor.  The bins are perfect to store clothing, or other items you may not always need, under your bed or in closets. Having a hamper will help you avoid walking into your room and throwing clothes on the floor

Keep track of other common messes that appear throughout your apartment and apply some of the tips to create creative organizational solutions of your own!  You can never have too much organization!
