The influence of color on mood has never been in question. Psychologists firmly believe that a person’s behavior is related to the color in his immediate surroundings. This is truer in home than in any other place. However, different colors affect individuals in different ways.

Color is a very subjective issue and preferences vary depending upon individuals’ experiences. Some colors are capable of rejuvenating, some bring energy in the atmosphere and still others make people feel cool and relaxed. Psychologists even recommend certain colors that can prevent crimes, and some that get you to sleep better. Colors are even known to help patients recuperate fast. No doubt that is the reason why people attach so much importance to it.

Your home is your place to relax and enjoy the company of your family. You will want the place to be serene and tranquilizing, and that colors can accomplish for you. If you choose paint colors wisely for your home, you will be able to experience joyous moments. You can further enhance your experience by choosing appropriate furniture with colors that match the paints on the wall.

To give variety to your home, always use a different color for each of the rooms. The colors you choose for each room must reflect the purpose of the room. In addition you may want an overall theme to your home because it is what that will speak about its owners and occupants. This too you can achieve with by using right colors and combinations.

However, you must note that when you choose a color for the exterior, your options may be a little limited, because you have to take durability into consideration and the neighborhood as well. General climatic conditions, moisture in the atmosphere and sunlight intensity are the other factors that need your attention.

What Colors to Use for Each Room

Here are some paint colors to consider for the most important rooms in a home.

1. Living Room – The ideal paint color for the living room is red. They are best known to increase energy levels of its occupants. Red is known to stimulate conversations, seek intimacy, raise blood pressure pleasantly, promote respiration and overall give you a feeling of euphoria. To double the effect of red paint, use furniture with matching colors; preferably those made with dark timber.

2. Kitchen & Dining Room – Yellow is a color often associated with happiness and bright sunlight. It is also a color most preferred in food because of its appetizing effect on people. It has the potential to make the room’s occupants feel energetic and uplift their mood to new heights. The other good effects of yellow are they stimulate blood circulation and help in purifying the blood. Psychologists however don’t recommend its use for rooms where you leave babies alone.

3. Bedrooms – Undoubtedly the best paint color for bedroom walls is blue or a combination that has plenty of blue in it. Blue is known to bring down blood pressure, create a romantic atmosphere, calm down your nerves, bring in serenity and help you breathe comfortably.

It is a very stimulating color and when plenty of sunlight flows in, you will really feel great. To bring out the best in blue don’t use the darker shades or hue; they give an opposite effect by making you feel sad or unwanted and unloved.

Another great color for the bedrooms is green. It is known to have all the good mood effects of blue and more. A room mostly green in theme provides comfort of mind, a feeling of togetherness, and generally promotes fertility in couple. Green is a universal color and therefore you can use it in the kitchen & dining room as well if you don’t prefer yellow.

White is generally the most preferred color for ceiling. You can use a different color though. However, it is best not to experiment if you are in doubt about its effect on your mood. Black should be used only to give accent otherwise it can have a negative effect on most people’s mood.
