Whilst the sun is beaming away and the sunlight pours into your home you may be thinking about having a few little household developments this summertime. With humid sleepless nights and spending more time in the garden and in more sociable areas around your home this summer there’s plenty to consider to help cool things down and to make your home a lighter, brighter place to enjoy this season.
KEEPING IT COOL

No-one likes a stuffy night’s sleep, and there’s nothing worse than sitting around your home feeling uncomfortable because of a surprise heat wave. Be prepared for warm weather by making a few adjustments to cater for the added heat. Summery blinds and drapes can be placed across windows and doors that usually reflect and help bring in the warm sunshine. This can help block out that “greenhouse effect” and will mean you’re shading as opposed to trapping the heat. If you’re feeling a little more ambitious you can always try painting your roof with a reflective paint to also deter the heat and sunlight.
CREATING YOUR SUMMER SANCTUARY

Of course your outdoor area is just as important as the indoors. Gardens, patio areas and driveways are all crucial parts of your fresh, clean summer sanctuary. Make sure all the areas are tidied and welcoming for guests and perhaps think about introducing some new shrubbery or potted plants to the areas. Give any surrounding decking, fence panels, or wooden sheds a fresh lick of paint to keep them bright and adding automatic gates will certainly go a long way in making your homestead even more of a summer haven.
GO EFFICIENT

If you’re looking to cool down this summertime and you’re simply turning to the idea of air-conditioning then think again. Whilst there are plenty of more efficient AC units available nowadays which won’t eat up your electricity bills it’s much better to consider some more energy efficient solutions to keeping out the heat. As mentioned above there are shading and sunlight blocking options but there are also other things you can do around the home to keep things as cool as possible. Instead of using the oven or cooker hobs in the evening for dinner perhaps consider doing a barbecue outside; even popping on the microwave will help keep the heat output down. Try not to fill your home with energy heavy devices that simply pump out unnecessary heat. If you’re adamant of keeping your computer on then utilise an add-on cooling device such as a USB fan so at least you’re converting the power into a cooling gust of air.
BRINGING IN THE LIGHT

Whilst the sun is shining outside it’s no use hiding indoors in a pokey, darkly lit room in your home. Lighten things up a bit with a fresh bright coat of white paint on the walls and ceilings. You can also bring the outside inside by placing a few indoor plants or colourful flowers strategically around the room. Mirrors can help reflect the sunlight and lighten things up even further whilst if you have hanging photos or art pieces you may want to think about switching them around for more summery-type images. Even a bowl of fresh fruit in the room can be a bright and colourful addition to your new summer space.
