The Dangers Of Asbestos In Your Home

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 05 August 2014 14:37

Asbestos is a group of minerals that can be often seen in older homes and apartments built in the mid 1970's and is also used in construction and used as brake lining in cars. Asbestos present in residences should not pose a health risk if left undisturbed.

However renovation, remodeling or even earthquakes can release fibers into the air which can stay in the lungs for years which can lead to dangerous health hazards such as Mesothelioma, Asbestosis and pleural plaques. Health problems may take a long time to develop after initial exposure; lung cancer can take 15 years or longer to develop.

The more asbestos a person inhales the higher the health risk. Smoking also increases the risks of complications from exposure. It may be a good idea to discuss the issue with your landlord if you live an apartment. Find out of the particles are sealed in or if the paint contains asbestos. Check the ceilings for cracks or damage which can cause the fibers to loosen.

Asbestos exposure symptoms include chest pains, chest tightness, persistent cough, shortness of breath, hoarseness and anemia. Medical testing in order to determine the root of the problem may include x-rays, lung function tests, ct scans and MRI.
