Wood floors can add a lot to a home, or to any room you have them in.  They are easier to have than carpets, especially when it comes to messes and spills.  And while hardwood floors are awesome, sometimes they can be tricky to clean and repair. Sometimes is easiest to get your wood floor cleaning done professionally.  For those other times, here are several tips that you can use for taking care of your wood floors.

Read the Label

The first tip is to make sure that when you are buying a cleaning product for your wood floor that you read the label. This is the best way that you will be able to ensure that it will work on the surface that you have. This is because if you don't buy the right products for your floor, it is going to mess up the floor. It might be a good idea to talk to a professional who will be able to help you to make sure that you have the best products for your floor. The cleaner will have a sealant in it that will need to be compatible with the type of floor that you have. It is also important that you use a microfiber mop on the wood floors.

Protectors

The second tip is to add the felt protectors to the legs of your furniture. This will help to protect your floors from any type of scratches. It is important to remember that they are not going to wear down over time so you will need to replace them. This is because they will not be as effective once they have worn down. If you have furniture that will be moved often, then you will probably need to replace the protectors every month.

Rugs

The third tip in wood floor cleaning is when you are shopping around, look for a rug. This is something that will be very important when you have wood flooring inside of your home. This is because it will be able to play double duty on the wood floors. It will make a great piece for decorating and it protects the floor.

Shoes

The fourth tip is to not wear your shoes when you are going to be walking on your wood floors. This is especially true about tap shoes and stilettos because these types of shoes can puncture the wood. If you are trying to make sure that your wood floors are going to stay extra clean, then enforce the no shoes policy throughout the house.

Sweep

The fifth tip is to sweep your floor before you mop it. This is the best way to make sure that your floors will stay in the best shape for a long period of time. If you mop first, then there is a chance that the dirt is going to scratch the floor. This is because it is like dragging sandpaper across your wood floor if you don't clean up the debris on the floor first.

Spills

The sixth tip is to make sure that you clean up any spills that you have on your wood floors as soon as they happen. Most of the time, it is not going to be too big of a deal as long as it gets cleaned up quickly. This is because you don't want to take a chance of the spill soaking down into the boards. If this happens, then the floor will start to rise and warp since the wood will be absorbing all of the liquid. Water is the worst thing for the wood but any liquid can cause problems.

Polish

The last tip is to polish the wood floor with a polyurethane finish. This is the best way to protect against any type of damage and increase the longevity of the floor. This will need to be done once every three months in order to keep the floors shiny. It is a good idea to polish the floor by using a buffing pad and not waxing it. The wax is not going to be good for the polyurethane finish that you have on your floor.
