The world of credit can be complex and often people enter into loan agreements without fully understanding the consequences of non payment. In order that you keep yourself creditworthy, it is important that you educate yourself in some aspects of the financial world. There are plenty of online resources that will help you to do that. By being financially aware, you can save yourself some of the problems that can arise from naivety. If you run into difficulties with a loan or credit and find that you cannot make the payments, the consequences of that may impact upon you for many years to come, it is important that you know what steps to take to avoid such problems.
Credit Reference Agencies
There are three main credit reference agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion (CallCredit). All of the agencies hold information about you which relates to your financial circumstances. This information includes details about any loans that you may have or have had, credit cards, bank accounts, electoral registration, previous addresses and personal details. It will also include details of how you have managed your finances and if you have had any County Court Judgements against you, the detail will also be included in your file. Your file does not give details about your medical history or your salary. The credit reference agency will use the information to allocate their score to you, this is known as your credit score. The higher the number, the better the score, all agencies use a different scoring system. When you apply to a lender for a loan, your lender will contact one of the agencies (different lenders will choose different agencies) and will be able to access all of your information. If you have previously defaulted on loan payments or you have any County Court Judgments against you, this will impact negatively on your score and the lender may decline your application. Your creditworthiness can change but it can often take a few years to repair a damaged report. Each agency allows you to access your report and it is recommended that you do that regularly to make sure that everything is in order and that all of the entries are as you would expect them to be, if you do notice an error, it is important that you have it corrected as soon as possible.
Each of the agencies has a website which provides detailed information about your credit score and can give you information on a variety of topics including Debt Management, Budgeting, Loans and Credit and the factors that affect your credit score to name but a few.
If you are planning to apply for credit or your credit score is thin or poor, you will find useful information on the steps you can take to make it better.
It is well worth having a search to help you with your particular enquiry. Education is the key. Perhaps you want to understand how interest rates work, perhaps you want to know more about the different types of loans and how they work or perhaps you would find it helpful to hear from others and gain some insight into their experiences, whatever you need to know, you will find the answer. It may also be worth using a comparison website to compare credit such as Crediful. Before being enticed by the ads that you see, remember if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Government Agencies
Prior to taking out a loan, it is important for you to do your financial homework. You need to be able to decide upon the monthly payment that would be comfortable for you. If your loan, say, is to be taken out over a period of years. Although it is impossible to predict the future, if you can, try to think a bit ahead so that you can work out whether or not your finances will remain stable enough
Debt is a recognised national problem and government departments are able to provide debt counselling to those in need. Should you find yourself in debt, it is important that you try to access help as soon as you can. There are steps that can be taken to help those in debt but it becomes more difficult to help if the problem has continued for a significant period of time. It is always advisable that you contact your lender as soon as possible if you feel that you could be running into financial problems.
Student Loans
It is worth using your local government website to be able to understand how a student loan works and if you will be eligible to apply. The website will give you detailed information about the loans that are available, the amount you can apply for and the repayment strategies that are open to you. It is important to remember that a student loan is still a loan and repayments will usually have to be made when your salary exceeds a certain amount. The website will have a lot of useful tips with regard to all aspects of student finance and if you are studying, it is important that you understand all of the options that are open to you.
