Self-Sufficient Home Checklist

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 27 November 2018 07:42

The lifeblood of the real estate industry is the ability of agents and brokers to match homebuyers and available properties. The growing interest in environmentally friendly lifestyles doesn’t have to add difficulty to the task of locating the perfect place. Green-thinking homebuyers just have to be made aware that any property can be made more sustainable and self-sufficient to some degree.

If a homebuyer is looking to get off the grid as much as possible, there are ways to incorporate self-sufficient practices even into an existing home that might not seem like a good fit for such a transformation. Energy consumption, food sourcing, water usage and recycling are just four areas that can be positively impacted without getting too complex.

Start with simple elements such as natural lighting and rain barrels, and add activities such as fishing, gardening and composting. This can be the beginning of a formula for creating a self-sufficient home. The resultant benefits include a reduced impact on the environment, less dependence on modern infrastructure, and fewer expenses.

The accompanying checklist is a resource for even more ideas on sustainability that starts at home — whether home is in the city, in the country or in the mountains.

Real estate trends come and go, but there is no downside to informing homebuyers about all of the possible ways to make a home more self-sufficient. It’s a trend that just may be sustainable on its own merits.
