19 Million Americans Live in Overcrowded Homes [New LendingTree Report]

LendingTree analyzed the latest housing data to determine just how crowded people are in their homes and where they're most likely feeling the squeeze. We found that nearly 6% of Americans — or 19.1 million in total — live in overcrowded homes. 

Where overcrowded homes are most common:

1. California
2. Hawaii
3. New York
4. Alaska 
5. Texas

Where overcrowded homes are least common:

1. Wyoming
2. Delaware
3. North Dakota
4. South Dakota
5. South Carolina

LendingTree's Chief Consumer Finance Analyst, Matt Schulz, had this to say:

"The states with the most overcrowded homes tend to be the ones with the nation's biggest urban centers and most expensive costs of living. In states like Wyoming, North Dakota and South Carolina, a family may be able to afford a home with a bunch of extra rooms. That’s generally not something you can do in larger metropolitan areas unless you’re wealthy.”
