Your Home, Inside and Out

Written by Posted On Tuesday, 24 September 2019 09:03

Whether you designed and built your own home just a year or two ago, or bought a older home that’s rich in history, you’re a part of a human tradition that dates back practically to the dawn of our species. We’re animals that think brilliantly and use tools — and, for millennia, we have used our smarts and our tools to build homes. Things have come a long way since the earliest human huts and caves, and our homes serve all sorts of purposes now. But your house still has that vital task of keeping the outside out and creating an inside for you to dwell in. A home has walls, rooms, doors, and windows. Homes create indoor spaces. Keeping the outside out and the inside in, though, is something that your home will need your help to do. Furthermore, it’s up to you to decide which spaces stay natural and which spaces are turned into creature-comfort hot spots — and you have the power to carve out outdoor living space, too. Here’s what you need to know about your home, inside and out.

Nature’s invasion plans

When it comes to keeping the outside world where it belongs, even the newest homes have a tough task. Mother Nature is a tough opponent, and she doesn’t intend to let you carve out a wonderful air-conditioned space free of rodents and creepy-crawlies. To beat her, you’ll need to be smart. That means staying on top of home maintenance and doing everything that you can to keep out pests. Keep your space clean and organized, store your food in secure containers, and keep your eyes peeled for visitors such as mice, ants, and roaches. If and when you do spot the invaders, call residential pest control experts right away and get those interlopers eradicated.

Don’t lose your cool

Basic shelters are about protecting you from the elements: Rain, snow, and all of the rest of the stuff that the post office won’t let slow them down. Primitive shelters can soften the blow of extreme temperatures, but they won’t exactly be comfortable in a heat wave or cold snap. Modern homes do a lot better, thanks to their powerful HVAC systems. But not all HVAC systems are the same. And, if you’re not careful, you could end up paying top dollar to heat or cool air that seeps out of your house and wastefully dissipates into the outside atmosphere. That’s why keeping your house (and your pocketbook) in harmony with nature means investing in great insulation and energy-efficient HVAC systems. Work with experts and get regular maintenance to make sure that you’re not losing energy and money through your house’s walls, attic, doors, and windows.

Enjoying nature

Your home’s never-ending battle with the outside world notwithstanding, you can find a lot of beautiful things to appreciate outside. And, as it happens, you can find ways to merge the comforts of home with the beauty of the wilds. All you need to do is invest in outdoor improvements such as decks, patios, pools, and outdoor kitchens. How natural or how developed you want your outdoor space is up to you, of course. But rest assured that you can manage cushions and even kitchens without starting a war with local wildlife. Just get experts to help you plan and set up your outdoor space. You might be surprised at just how affordable the patio quotes (as well as price quotes for all other sorts of outdoor improvements) can be. These sorts of improvements can increase the value of your property, and they certainly will increase the joy you get from your home. What’s better than hanging out outside, resting in the knowledge that your home is safe from critters, energy-efficient, and at peace with the nature that exists beyond its doors?
